Buoyant Brick House
The Buoyant Brick House is an exploration of materiality and gravity. Located in the coastal context of Pondicherry, the design challenges the perceived heaviness of traditional masonry by elevating the brick to the highest plane of the structure.
- Floating Vernacular: The standout feature is a sweeping roof extension, exposed in brick, creating a “buoyant” visual effect that defies the material’s natural density.
- Thermal Mass & Innovation: The exposed brick roof acts as a high-performance thermal barrier, shielding the interior from the tropical sun while providing a rich, textured silhouette against the skyline.
- Textural Continuity: Earthy tones of exposed brickwork transition from vertical surfaces to the ceiling, blurring the lines between structural walls and the protective canopy.
- Light & Suspension: Large openings and slender supports allow the heavy roof to appear as if it is hovering, inviting a constant play of light and shadow throughout the day.
